According to two recently released studies, increasing BMI and waist circumference are associated with increased incidence of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) in Caucasians.?
The most likely cause is increased pressure visceral or abdominal fat places on the lower esophageal sphincter. The association seen between waist circumference and GERD in Caucasians is not apparently shared by black or Asian populations. This may indicate that black and Asian people carry their excess weight under the skin rather than around their organs.

Vegetable Intake Reduces Prostate Cancer

Overweight men have a significantly higher risk of developing aggressive forms of prostate cancer. New research released by the National Cancer Institute indicates that those attempting to combat the disease by eating tomatoes may need to rethink their strategy. The research discovered that blood levels of lycopene, the ingredient in tomatoes thought to help combat prostate cancer, played no part in preventing the disease. The same research indicated that cruciferous vegetables such a cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli did appear to reduce the development of more aggressive forms of prostate cancer.

Children Who Super Size

Researchers investigating the eating patterns of five thousand fifth graders found that students who ate at fast food restaurants at least once each week and those who ate dinner in front of the TV were most likely to choose the large-sized portions of French fries and potato chips. Furthermore, the more TV the students watched and/or the more frequently they ate at fast food restaurants, the larger were the portions they chose. Based on portion size analysis, children who ate the large-sized portions of fries and chips ate an average of 243 calories more per day than the students who indicated they ate the recommended portion. Those who ate large portions of fries and chips also reported eating the smallest amount of vegetables.

An Intensive Weight Loss Program May Help People Lose Over 100 Pounds

Researchers have found that some people who use a meal replacement formula diet in preparation for bariatric surgery end up losing enough weight and keeping it off with intensive behavioral therapy that they never do have the surgery. At the beginning of the study, 97% (114) of the patients had a least one obesity-related health problem and 74% (87) were taking a prescription medication to treat a weight-related condition. At forty-four weeks, the average weight loss was 145.5 pounds. Large and significant decreases in cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, and blood pressure were also seen. Due to their improved health, 66% of patients were able to discontinue their use of prescription medications, resulting in a savings of $100 per month per patient. Only two patients had adverse events during the initial 44-week weight loss process.

Grain, Bran, and Germ Intake and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

The connection between type 2 diabetes and the consumption of refined carbohydrates such as sugar, white rice and white flour was demonstrated in a study of 161,737 female American nurses by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. Data collected on health habits and diet over an 18-year period indicated that the more whole grain and bran in the diet, the lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. These findings existed independent of weight gain in the subjects. The results of this study and review suggest that by following the US Dietary Guidelines, Americans could significantly reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Low-carbohydrate nutrition and metabolism

Restricting dietary carbohydrates causes a shift in the body from using glucose and fatty acids to using fatty acids and ketones (remnants of fatty acids) for energy production. Other changes in hormone and neurotransmitter levels from a low-carbohydrate diet appear to reduce hunger and ease appetite control. Low-carbohydrate diets have also shown improvement in type 2 diabetes by reducing the livers production of glucose and by encouraging the pancreas to release insulin. Concerns about the increased risk of heart disease through increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels do not appear to be supported by current research. Long-term effects are still not known, but with adequate medical monitoring, low-carbohydrate diets have potential to assist with weight loss and with controlling type 2 diabetes.

Diet Alters Stress Hormone Production

Researches demonstrate that the carbohydrate and fat people routinely eat can influence the amount of cortisol circulating in their blood streams. A high-fat/low-carbohydrate diet results in the greatest increase in cortisol levels and reduces excretion independent of weight loss. This suggests that the composition of a persons diet can alter how their body regulates stress hormone production. This may, in turn, affect an individuals ability to manage their weight, regardless of the number of calories they consume.

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston enrolled eighty overweight and obese patients for a collaborative treatment program using physician and dietitian counseling. The average weight loss at 21 months was 10.8 pounds. At 31 months, 81% of patients had kept off enough weight to maintain improvements in their health. LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased by an average of 9.3%. Triglycerides were reduced by an average of 34%. HDL (good) cholesterol increased by an average of 9.6%. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was lowered from 129 to 126 mm Hg and from 79 to 75 mm Hg respectively.

Large hip-to-waist ratio linked to early CVD

When compared with Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference, cardiovascular imaging more accurately links the waist-to-hip ratio measurement with the presence of coronary artery disease. Using 2,744 participants in the Dallas Heart Study, researchers were able use heart imaging to directly relate the various measurements to determine the most effective clinical predictor of atherosclerotic heart disease. The results also showed a strong relationship between coronary artery disease and obesity that other studies using BMI alone had been unable to confirm.

Bariatric Surgery Decreases Mortality

Bariatric surgery improves health status and reduces the risk of mortality in very obese patients, according to a Swedish study. The study followed 4047 obese patients for an average of 10.9 years. Of these patients, 2010 of them underwent bariatric surgery (surgery group), and 2037 received conventional treatment (control group).
The average weight change for the patients in the control group was + 2%. Maximum weight losses in the surgical group occurred between 1 and 2 years after surgery. Patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery lost an average of 32%; vertical-banded gastroplasty patients lost an average of 25%; and gastric banding patients lost an average of 20%. After 10 years, the weight loss experienced by the surgery groups stabilized at 25% for the bypass patients, 16% for the vertical banded gastroplasty patients, and 14% for the gastric banding patients. There were 129 deaths in the control group and 101 deaths in the surgery group during the course of the study. The most common causes of death were myocardial infarction, more commonly known as heart attack, (25 in the control group; 13 in the surgery group) and cancer (47 in the control group, 29 in the surgery group).

Fat deposits in mens abdominal area, whether visceral or subcutaneous in nature, reduce the level of active testosterone they produce, but by slightly different mechanisms.
Subcutaneous fat seems to reduce the amount of testosterone circulating in mens blood streams by decreasing the amount of bioactive estrodial; whereas visceral fat affects all aspects of testosterone production. This study indicates that gaining weight in the abdominal area decreases a mans sex hormone levels, which adversely affects fertility and muscle mass and bone health.

Neurological complications following weight loss surgery can involve one or more parts of the nervous system: the brain, the spinal cord, the nerves leaving the spinal cord, or the peripheral nerves. Individuals who exhibit a delayed onset of neurological symptoms may have developed these conditions as a consequence of nutrient deficiencies, particularly of inadequate intakes of B12 and copper. Mental confusion may occur as a result of a lack of the vitamin thiamine. When thiamine is lacking, this condition can occur rather quickly since this vitamin is important for proper brain function. These findings underscore the need for bariatric surgery patients to carefully follow the post-surgical nutritional guidelines, including lifelong use of a multivitamin and mineral supplement specially formulated for use by people who have had bariatric surgery.

So which is it jogging or walking, which is the better exercise for weight loss? Well, they both arent that good if you want fast weight loss, however I will show you how you can make 2 changes to 1 of them to make it 1 of the best weight loss exercises you can possibly do.
First off, some basic info
If youre going to exercise and plan on jogging, you can burn up a good deal of calories during your jogs. The problem is, after youre done jogging, youre done burning calories. Not good! No afterburn effect. For the amount of time you put in, this isnt an efficient use of time to maximize fat loss.
Now, if your exercise plan includes walking, this is generally good for long term and slow weight loss, but bad for quick weight loss.

Walking!
Heres the deal walking on a flat surface sucks for fast weight loss, but walking on an incline of 10-15 degrees works incredible for massive weight loss quickly. Theyre totally different. Why? Because walking on an incline creates a huge oxygen deficit which forces your body to scavenge your bodyfat for quick energy supplies thus, your bodyfat gets melted off for energy.
All you need to do is walk 15-20 minutes a day on an inclined treadmill or hill. You just turned walking into a superior weight loss exercise. So thats change #1.
Change #2 is this while walking, take 1 deep breath each minute. This again has to do with oxygen intake. All you do is inhale for 5 seconds, hold it for 5 seconds, and exhale for 5 seconds. Do that 1 time each minute youre walking. Thats been proven to help you burn off an extra 22-30% more calories during a walk.
So, jogging or walking, which is the better weight loss exercise? If you make those 2 changes above, walking is the better exercise for you to do.
